Only God gives life. Rachel had a husband who loved her and a sister with four sons, and she turned on Jacob and said, "Give me children, or I will die!" ([Genesis 30:1](https://doxa.app/bible/GEN/30#v1)).

## Rachel's cry to Jacob

Rachel said it because she envied her sister. Leah had four sons and Rachel had none: "When Rachel saw that she was not bearing any children for Jacob, she envied her sister" ([Genesis 30:1](https://doxa.app/bible/GEN/30#v1)). In that world a wife with no sons had no secure place in the household and no name to outlast her.

## In the place of God

Jacob meant that God alone gives children. His answer came out in anger: "Am I in the place of God, who has withheld children from you?" ([Genesis 30:2](https://doxa.app/bible/GEN/30#v2)). Every word of it was true, and he stopped there.

His father had faced the same empty tent and gone to the LORD: "Isaac prayed to the LORD on behalf of his wife, because she was barren" ([Genesis 25:21](https://doxa.app/bible/GEN/25#v21)). Jacob knew whose place it was to give life, and that day he did not take Rachel's grief there. So Rachel reached for the plan Sarai had used with Hagar ([Genesis 16:2](https://doxa.app/bible/GEN/16#v2)): "Here is my maidservant Bilhah. Sleep with her, that she may bear children for me, so that through her I too can build a family" ([Genesis 30:3](https://doxa.app/bible/GEN/30#v3)).

## Four sons and a contest

Dan means he vindicated, Naphtali my wrestling, Gad fortune and Asher happy, and the four names recorded a contest between two sisters. When Bilhah bore Dan, Rachel said, "God has vindicated me; He has heard my plea and given me a son" ([Genesis 30:6](https://doxa.app/bible/GEN/30#v6)). At Naphtali's birth: "In my great struggles, I have wrestled with my sister and won" ([Genesis 30:8](https://doxa.app/bible/GEN/30#v8)). Leah answered with her own servant, Zilpah. At Gad's birth she said, "How fortunate!" ([Genesis 30:11](https://doxa.app/bible/GEN/30#v11)), and at Asher's, "How happy I am! For the women call me happy" ([Genesis 30:13](https://doxa.app/bible/GEN/30#v13)).

Rachel knew that God hears. She had pleaded with Him and said so, and at the next birth she named the boy for a win over her sister. Leah, who had once said, "This time I will praise the LORD" ([Genesis 29:35](https://doxa.app/bible/GEN/29#v35)), now spoke of fortune and of what the women said about her.

God kept His word through all of it. At Bethel He had told Jacob, "I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you" ([Genesis 28:15](https://doxa.app/bible/GEN/28#v15)). Each of these boys became a tribe of Israel, built by God in a household where everyone was counting sons.

## A daughter of Asher

Jesus was greeted in the temple by a prophetess from the tribe of Asher, the son Leah named happy. Luke named her as Anna, a widow "of the tribe of Asher" ([Luke 2:36](https://doxa.app/bible/LUK/2#v36)). She "worshiped night and day, fasting and praying" ([Luke 2:37](https://doxa.app/bible/LUK/2#v37)), and when she saw the Child, "she gave thanks to God and spoke about the Child to all who were waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem" ([Luke 2:38](https://doxa.app/bible/LUK/2#v38)).

Leah's happiness rested on what the women would say. Anna's rested on God, and when His promise came she thanked Him.

## Pour it out to Him

Rachel's cry was honest, and God heard it. Some years later, "God remembered Rachel. He listened to her and opened her womb" ([Genesis 30:22](https://doxa.app/bible/GEN/30#v22)). Whatever you have been asking people to give you, take it to Him first: "Trust in Him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts before Him" ([Psalms 62:8](https://doxa.app/bible/PSA/62#v8)).

Then keep the record. Write down what you asked Him and the date in the [Doxa app](https://doxa.app/download), and when He answers, write that down beside it. Years from now you will read back the story of the God who heard you.

We are the people who remember what God has said and done, and as we remember, we come to know Him. He hears us, and He alone gives life.

What have you been asking people for that you could bring to God today?
