![A wooden ark aground on a bare mountain peak just breaking the surface of a wide grey sea, the water lower than the summit, a single dove in flight toward the ark under a clearing sky, no people, no faces, no text](https://doxa.app/images/blog/daily-lift-9-genesis-8-1-14-hero.jpg)

For months the ark had been a wooden box on an endless grey sea. The rain had stopped, but the water stayed, deep over every mountain. Inside, eight people and pair after pair of animals waited above a drowned world.

Then one line turns the whole chapter.

"But God remembered Noah and all the animals and livestock that were with him in the ark" ([Genesis 8:1](https://doxa.app/bible/GEN/8#v1)).

## God remembered Noah

In Scripture, when God remembers someone, He moves on their behalf. Remembering is covenant language for God keeping His word in action. He remembered His covenant and brought Israel out of Egypt ([Exodus 2:24](https://doxa.app/bible/EXO/2#v24)). He remembered Hannah, and she had a son ([1 Samuel 1:19](https://doxa.app/bible/1SA/1#v19)). Every time, the memory is the moment the promise starts to move.

So watch what happens the instant He remembers Noah. "And God sent a wind over the earth, and the waters began to subside" ([Genesis 8:1](https://doxa.app/bible/GEN/8#v1)). The springs of the deep close, the floodgates shut, the water starts going down ([Genesis 8:2–3](https://doxa.app/bible/GEN/8#v2)). Noah could not command a single one of those things. He was sealed in a box on top of a flood he had no power to drain. What turned the whole disaster around was God calling him to mind.

## A year of waiting

Noah was inside the ark for just over a year, and the water took many months to go down even after God remembered him: weeks for the mountain peaks to appear, then more weeks of sending out birds. That is the hard part of the chapter. The waters go down by inches. The ark grounds on the mountains of Ararat, and it is weeks before the peaks even appear ([Genesis 8:4–5](https://doxa.app/bible/GEN/8#v5)). Noah sends out a raven, then a dove, and the dove comes back with nowhere to land ([Genesis 8:8–9](https://doxa.app/bible/GEN/8#v9)). He waits seven more days and sends her again, and this time "the dove returned to him in the evening with a freshly plucked olive leaf in her beak" ([Genesis 8:11](https://doxa.app/bible/GEN/8#v11)). One small green leaf, and Noah knew the world was coming back.

That is often how it feels to be remembered by God. The promise is already moving before you can see the water level drop. You are still inside the waiting, still sending out the dove, and for weeks the only evidence you get is a single leaf. It counts. God's remembering was sure from verse one; the drying just takes time.

## Wind, water and a dove

Genesis 8 points to Jesus because its rescue, a wind over the water, a dove and new life rising, is the picture God fills in when Jesus comes up out of the Jordan. Look at how the rescue begins. A wind from God moves over the water and dry land starts to rise, the same way the Spirit of God hovered over the water on the Bible's first page and dry land appeared ([Genesis 1:2](https://doxa.app/bible/GEN/1#v2)). And a dove comes down over the flood carrying the first sign of new life. Generations later a dove comes down again, over the Jordan, as Jesus rises up out of the water and the new creation begins ([Matthew 3:16](https://doxa.app/bible/MAT/3#v16)). The flood going down was a small rehearsal of a larger rescue: God remembering His people in His Son and bringing a whole new world up out of the water.

We keep God's words written down for the same reason Noah needed that leaf. Our memory leaks. So record what He has said to you in the [Doxa app](https://doxa.app/download), and read it back to yourself while the water is still high.

What promise are you waiting to see move, and have you kept it somewhere you can find it while you wait?
