Chapters
Naomi loses her husband and two sons in Moab. She urges her daughters-in-law to return to their families. Orpah leaves, but Ruth clings to Naomi with the famous declaration of loyalty and returns with her to Bethlehem.
Ruth gleans in the fields of Boaz, a wealthy relative of Naomi's late husband. Boaz notices her, provides protection and extra grain, and shows remarkable kindness to the foreign widow.
Naomi instructs Ruth to approach Boaz at the threshing floor to claim his protection as a kinsman-redeemer. Ruth courageously follows the plan, and Boaz promises to redeem her if the closer relative declines.
Boaz negotiates at the city gate, and the closer relative declines to redeem Naomi's land. Boaz marries Ruth, and they have a son named Obed, who becomes the grandfather of King David — placing Ruth in the lineage of Jesus.
