1 Peter 2:9-10 gives one of Scripture's clearest statements of who a believer is: a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession. Peter writes to ordinary, scattered Christians and tells them that once they were not a people, but now they are the people of God. These verses anchor identity in what God declares rather than in performance or circumstance.
9But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, to proclaim the virtues of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.
10Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
