Fasting in the Bible

12 chapters across 10 books

Key Verses

“No one can serve two masters: Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”

Matthew 6:24 (BSB) ›

“And he said, “Listen, all you people of Judah and Jerusalem! Listen, King Jehoshaphat! This is what the LORD says: ‘Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army, for the battle does not belong to you, but to God.”

2 Chronicles 20:15 (BSB) ›

“You need not fight this battle. Take up your positions, stand firm, and see the salvation of the LORD on your behalf, O Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be afraid or discouraged. Go out and face them tomorrow, for the LORD is with you.’””

2 Chronicles 20:17 (BSB) ›

““Do not be afraid, you who are highly precious,” he said. “Peace be with you! Be strong now; be very strong!” As he spoke with me, I was strengthened and said, “Speak, my lord, for you have strengthened me.””

Daniel 10:19 (BSB) ›

“For I was ashamed to ask the king for an escort of soldiers and horsemen to protect us from our enemies on the road, since we had told him, “The hand of our God is gracious to all who seek Him, but His great anger is against all who forsake Him.””

Ezra 8:22 (BSB) ›

2 Chronicles

2 Chronicles 20

A vast enemy coalition attacks Judah. Jehoshaphat proclaims a fast and prays: We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on You. God says the battle is His. Judah sends singers ahead of the army, and God sets ambushes against the enemies, who destroy each other.

Daniel

Daniel 10

After three weeks of fasting, Daniel sees a terrifying angelic being. The angel reveals that a spiritual prince of Persia delayed him for 21 days until Michael helped. This chapter uniquely pulls back the curtain on spiritual warfare behind world events.

Esther

Esther 4

Mordecai mourns in sackcloth and urges Esther to intercede with the king. Esther fears approaching the king uninvited (punishable by death) but Mordecai delivers the famous challenge: Who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this? Esther calls for a three-day fast.

Ezra

Ezra 8

Ezra lists those who return with him and discovers no Levites among them. He recruits Levites, then calls a fast at the river Ahava rather than requesting a military escort, trusting God for protection. They arrive safely in Jerusalem.

Isaiah

Isaiah 58

True fasting is not ritual hunger but justice: loosing chains of injustice, feeding the hungry, sheltering the homeless. When Israel practices true righteousness, their light will break forth like dawn and God will satisfy and guide them continually.

Joel

Joel 1

A devastating locust plague — wave after wave — strips the land bare. Joel calls the people to mourn, fast, and cry out to God. The priests should weep between the porch and altar. The day of the Lord is near, and even the animals groan.

Jonah

Jonah 3

Jonah preaches a one-line sermon — Nineveh will be overthrown in forty days — and the entire city repents, from king to cattle. God relents from the planned destruction. The greatest mass repentance in Scripture comes from the most unlikely audience.

Matthew

Matthew 4

Jesus is led into the wilderness where He is tempted three times by the devil, overcoming each temptation with Scripture. He begins His public ministry in Galilee, calling His first disciples and healing throughout the region.

Matthew 6

Continuing the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus teaches about authentic spiritual practices—giving, praying, and fasting in secret rather than for show. He delivers the Lord's Prayer and commands followers to seek first the kingdom of God, trusting the Father for daily provision.

Matthew 9

Jesus heals a paralytic, demonstrating His authority to forgive sins. He calls Matthew the tax collector, dines with sinners, and performs further healings including raising a girl from death. He expresses compassion for crowds who are like sheep without a shepherd.

Mark

Mark 2

Jesus heals a paralytic lowered through a roof, demonstrating His authority to forgive sins. He calls Levi the tax collector, defends eating with sinners, and asserts His lordship over the Sabbath. He teaches that new wine requires new wineskins.

Nehemiah

Nehemiah 1

Nehemiah, cupbearer to King Artaxerxes in Persia, learns that Jerusalem's walls are still broken and its gates burned. Devastated, he weeps, fasts, and prays a powerful prayer of confession and petition, asking God to grant him favor with the king.
