A Lawyer Encounters the Bible
In the autumn of 1821, a young lawyer named Charles Finney experienced a profound change that would alter the course of his life and impact countless others. Born in Warren, Connecticut, Finney grew up largely without religious influence. His journey towards faith began during his legal studies in Adams, New York, where he noticed frequent references to the Bible in legal texts, prompting him to purchase and read one himself. Despite his burgeoning interest in spiritual matters, Finney was deeply conflicted, concealing his Bible and whispering prayers in secret.
The Day Everything Changed
On October 10, 1821, as he grappled with his inner turmoil, Finney resolved to settle the question of his soul's salvation. His convictions intensified, but his heart felt hardened until a pivotal moment on his way to the office. He felt an inner confrontation, questioning his attempts to earn righteousness through his own efforts. As Finney recounted, 'What are you waiting for? What are you trying to do? Are you endeavoring to work out a righteousness of your own?'
This confrontation led Finney to a revelation about Christ's atonement. He described it as seeing 'the reality and fullness of the atonement of Christ,' realizing that he needed to submit to God's righteousness through Christ. Determined to give his heart to God, he ventured into the woods to pray, vowing, 'I will give my heart to God, or I never will come down from there.'
In the solitude of the woods, Finney encountered what he believed to be the presence of Jesus Christ. He felt an overwhelming sense of God's love and described a 'mighty baptism of the Holy Ghost,' likening it to the breath of God, which filled his heart with indescribable love. With his newfound faith, Finney felt justified by faith, free from guilt, and filled with a desire to serve God.
The following day, Finney's transformation became evident when he informed a client that he could no longer practice law, as he had a new calling to plead the cause of Christ. His life pivoted towards ministry, and he became a powerful revivalist preacher, leading many to faith and actively participating in social reforms, including abolitionism.
Charles Finney's story is a testament to the transformative power of Jesus, who redirected his life from law to leading spiritual awakenings. His legacy as a minister and educator at Oberlin College continues to inspire generations.
