Born in the Coal Mines

Peter Marshall was born on May 27, 1902, in the coal-mining town of Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire, Scotland. Despite his humble beginnings, he sensed a calling higher than the mines. As a young man, he worked tirelessly in the coal pits to fund his evening classes at Coatbridge Technical School, where he studied electrical engineering. However, a transformative moment came when a missionary's words at Buchanan Street Kirk stirred his soul, leading him to dedicate his life to ministry. As Peter himself expressed, 'I have determined to give my life to God for Him to use me wherever he wants me.'

Arriving in America

In 1927, driven by this divine calling, Peter immigrated to the United States. Arriving at Ellis Island with little more than faith, he embarked on his theological education at Columbia Theological Seminary, graduating in 1931. Facing financial struggles, he found unexpected support from friends in his Sunday school class, who funded his studies, an intervention he attributed to God's provision.

From Atlanta to Washington

Peter's ministry journey took him from the small town of Covington, Georgia, to the bustling city of Atlanta, and eventually to the heart of the nation in Washington, D.C. As the pastor of New York Avenue Presbyterian Church, he became known for his eloquent sermons and heartfelt prayers. His influence grew, and by 1947, he was appointed as the Chaplain of the U.S. Senate, where he served until his passing in 1949.

Not One Minute Early

Throughout his life, Peter Marshall's faith was unwavering, even in the face of adversity. He once remarked, 'When the clock strikes for me, I shall go, not one minute early, and not one minute late. Until then, there is nothing to fear.' His commitment to God's will and his impact on national leaders during a tumultuous era remains a testament to the power of faith and divine guidance.

Peter Marshall's legacy continues to inspire, as his words and actions pointed not to his own achievements but to the provision and faithfulness of Jesus.
