Coptic Christians Kidnapped in Libya
In the early months of 2015, 21 Christian men faced unimaginable adversity. These men, primarily Coptic Orthodox Christians from Egypt, had traveled to Libya as migrant workers, seeking better economic opportunities for their families back home. Yet, their journey took a harrowing turn when they were kidnapped by ISIS in Sirte, Libya. Held captive under brutal conditions, they were offered a choice: renounce their faith and convert to Islam, or face death.
Refusing to Deny Faith
With unwavering conviction, all 21 men refused to deny their Christian faith. Reports reveal that in their final moments, as they were led to a beach near Sirte for execution, they cried out, 'Lord Jesus!' Their steadfast faith in the face of death resonated worldwide, and their testimony became a rallying cry for Christians everywhere.
Recognized as Christian Martyrs
The Coptic Orthodox Church canonized them as martyrs and saints, recognizing their sacrifice as a profound testament to the power of faith. Their martyrdom drew international attention, highlighting the persecution of Christians and serving as a unifying call across denominations. Pope Francis acknowledged their courage, stating, 'They only said: Jesus, help me!' emphasizing the strength found in their final prayer.
Legacy of Faithful Sacrifice
In 2018, the remains of 20 of these men were returned to Egypt, where they were laid to rest in a specially constructed shrine, a place of honor and remembrance. Matthew Ayariga, the lone Ghanaian among them, was also honored, his body transferred to Egypt in 2019. Their legacy is not one of vengeance but of pride, as their families and communities remember them as heroes of faith.
The story of these men is a powerful reminder of the strength found in belief and the transformative power of faith in the face of persecution. Their final words, a simple yet profound prayer, stand as a testament to their unyielding belief in Jesus.
