Francis Chan, born in Hong Kong in 1967, experienced profound loss early in life, losing his parents and stepmother by age 12. Raised by his grandmother in California, Chan encountered Jesus at a youth group and committed his life to sharing the message of salvation. He stated, 'If this is true about heaven and hell, then I need to tell everyone I can.' This conviction led him to study youth ministry and theology, earning a Master of Divinity.
In 1994, Chan and his wife, Lisa, founded Cornerstone Community Church in Simi Valley, California. The church flourished, growing from 30 members to thousands within 15 years. Despite this success, Chan felt uneasy as the focus shifted from God to his own speaking abilities. He questioned whether the church was truly following God's command to love one another.
In 2008, Chan co-authored *Crazy Love: Overwhelmed by a Relentless God*, challenging Christians to live counter-culturally and love genuinely. Yet, as the book rose to fame, Chan wrestled with pride. 'I freaked out during that time in my life,' he admitted, acknowledging the struggle with his growing celebrity status.
By 2010, Chan felt called to leave Cornerstone to pursue a new vision. He longed for a church where everyone loved and served one another equally. Stepping down after 16 years, Chan and his family moved to Hong Kong, ministering to the ultra-poor and planting house churches. 'I can let go of the numbers, I can let go of the fame, the money, everything else,' Chan said, emphasizing his desire to please God.
Chan's ministry evolved into the We Are Church network, emphasizing small gatherings that foster authentic community and spiritual growth. Through his journey, Chan witnessed miraculous healings and remained committed to living out his faith with radical generosity and love.
Today, Francis Chan continues to inspire believers worldwide, giving Jesus the credit for every transformation and miracle along the way.
