Setting the Stage for Revival

In January 1907, Pyongyang, a city once known for its indulgence in "wine, women, and song," became the epicenter of a profound spiritual transformation. Amidst the harsh realities of Japanese occupation, where brutal oppression was the norm, Korean Christians and missionaries gathered at Jangdaehyun Church for their annual New Year Bible study, praying fervently for revival. Among them was Kil Seon-ju, a respected elder, who played a pivotal role.

The Spark That Ignited Revival

On the evening of January 14, Kil Seon-ju stood before the congregation and confessed to embezzling funds, saying, "I am a sinner like Achan." This act of humility and repentance was the spark that ignited the revival. As William Blair, a Presbyterian missionary present at the meeting, described, "The roof was lifted from the building, and the Spirit of God came down from heaven in a mighty avalanche of power upon us."

God Moves Through Deep Repentance

The revival was characterized by intense emotion and a deep sense of God's presence. Attendees confessed sins publicly, weeping and trembling as they sought forgiveness. An observer likened the sound of their prayers to "the falling of many waters, an ocean of prayer beating against God's throne." As people repented, they also took actionβ€”returning stolen money and property, and reconciling with those they had wronged, even forgiving their Japanese oppressors.

The Lasting Impact of Transformation

The transformation was undeniable. Thousands of new converts joined the faith, and by July 1907, the number had risen to 30,000. Churches multiplied swiftly across Korea, and early morning prayer gatherings became a hallmark of Korean Protestant spirituality. Despite increased persecution, the revival's impact endured, earning Pyongyang the moniker "Jerusalem of the East."

Through this awakening, Jesus brought about a remarkable change in both individuals and communities, showcasing the power of repentance and reconciliation. The legacy of the 1907 Pyongyang Revival continues to inspire believers worldwide to seek God's presence with sincerity and devotion.
