Māori Chief Encounters Christian Missionaries
In the early 1820s, as missionaries began sharing Christianity with the Māori people in New Zealand, a remarkable transformation took place in the life of an elderly Māori chief named Rangi. Living in Waitangi, Rangi was a respected leader who initially adhered to traditional Māori customs and spiritual beliefs. However, his encounter with missionaries at Paihia around June 1824 marked the beginning of a profound change.
Prayer for a New Heart
Rangi, curious about the Christian teachings, began observing the Sabbath, defying the traditional *tapu* (sacred restrictions) by experimenting with planting kumara. Encouraged by the missionaries, he prayed fervently for a new heart. His prayers were answered about a year later when he professed his faith, saying that his heart was full of love for Jesus Christ.
Divine Dream Vision of Heaven
In a dream, Rangi believed he saw himself welcomed into heaven by Jesus Himself. This experience solidified his faith, leading him to publicly declare his love for Jesus despite his frail health due to tuberculosis. As Rangi shared with missionary Richard Davis, 'His heart was very full of love to Jesus Christ, that he was very ill in his body but that he hoped to be soon in the good place.'
Baptism and Lasting Legacy
On his deathbed, Rangi chose the baptismal name 'Karaitiana,' meaning Christian, as he was baptized by Henry Williams. He passed away on September 15, 1825, a day after his baptism. His death profoundly affected his family, with his brothers inspired to begin their own faith journeys. Upon his death, a comet appeared in the sky, which his family saw as a sign of his journey to heaven.
Rangi's transformation, from a follower of traditional beliefs to a devout follower of Jesus, left a lasting legacy. His story of conversion and faith continues to inspire, demonstrating the profound impact of Jesus' love and the power of prayer.
