Crisis of Faith
Born on September 3, 1889, in Rampur, Punjab, India, Sundar Singh was raised in a wealthy Sikh family. The tragic death of his mother when he was fourteen plunged him into a crisis of faith, leaving him angry and disillusioned. In his turmoil, he even burned a Bible, page by page. However, this marked the beginning of a profound transformation.
The Vision That Changed Everything
On December 18, 1904, Sundar experienced a life-altering vision of Jesus. In this vision, Jesus spoke to him, saying, 'How long will you deny me? I died for you; I have given my life for you. You were praying to know the right way; why do you not take it? I am the Way.' This encounter led to Sundar's conversion to Christianity, and he was baptized on his sixteenth birthday in 1905 at an English church in Simla.
Life as a Christian Sadhu
Embracing a life of poverty and simplicity, Sundar adopted the lifestyle of a Christian sadhu in October 1906, wearing a saffron turban and robe. He traveled extensively, sharing the message of Jesus throughout India, Tibet, and beyond. His journeys took him to places like Punjab, Kashmir, Tibet, and even as far as Europe and the United States.
Steadfast Through Persecution
Despite facing rejection from his family and numerous hardships, including imprisonment in Tibet's 'Well of Death,' Sundar remained steadfast in his faith. He once said, 'I am not worthy to follow in the steps of my Lord, but, like Him, I want no home, no possessions. Like Him, I will belong to the road, sharing the suffering of my people, eating with those who will give me shelter, and telling all men of the love of God.'
Throughout his life, Sundar attributed his protection and deliverance to divine intervention. His escape from the 'Well of Death' was seen as miraculous, as was his survival through various life-threatening situations during his travels. Sundar Singh's life and testimony remain a powerful example of Jesus' transformative power and enduring love.
