A.W. Tozer: A Life Redirected

1897-1963β€’πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈAkron, Ohio, USA

A.W. Tozer's life was transformed from skepticism to deep faith after hearing a street preacher in 1914 Ohio, leading him to become one of Christianity's most influential authors and pastors.

β€œLord, be merciful to me a sinner”

Born on April 21, 1897, in La Jose, Pennsylvania, Aiden Wilson Tozer's journey to faith began in an unassuming way. As a teenager working at a tire company, Tozer's life took a pivotal turn in Akron, Ohio, around 1914. On his way home, he overheard a street preacher urging those who sought salvation to simply call on God. Inspired, Tozer climbed into his attic and prayed, 'Lord, be merciful to me a sinner.' That moment marked the beginning of a profound transformation.

Before this encounter, Tozer was known for his skepticism, often seeking counsel from agnostics rather than turning to faith. However, after his conversion, his life was radically changed. He was filled with a deep thirst for knowledge and a hunger for God, leading him to immerse himself in Bible study, prayer, and the writings of spiritual mentors. Tozer later reflected on this transformation, expressing gratitude for the gentle guidance of the Holy Spirit, which led him to follow the 'faint light' he had seen.

In 1919, Tozer accepted his first pastoral role in Nutter Fort, West Virginia, despite lacking formal theological education. His ministry continued to grow over the years, including significant tenures at Southside Alliance Church in Chicago and Avenue Road Alliance Church in Toronto. Tozer's teachings emphasized knowing God deeply, the importance of personal holiness, and the transformative power of the Holy Spirit. He articulated, 'The essential condition of the baptism of the Holy Spirit is to yield everything to God.'

Tozer's influence extended beyond the pulpit through his editorship of the *Alliance Weekly* magazine and his numerous books, including *The Pursuit of God* and *The Knowledge of the Holy*. These works continue to challenge believers to seek a deeper relationship with God. Tozer's life, marked by simplicity and devotion, remains a testament to the power of Jesus to redirect a heart and life towards His purposes.
