Bible data credits

Doxa joins the people, places and themes of the Bible to the verses where they occur, and shows the meaning of each Hebrew and Greek word in Strong's word study. This data comes from open sources, and we thank the people who made it.

Word study: Strong's Exhaustive Concordance (James Strong, 1890, public domain). The short glosses come from STEP Bible; the Hebrew and Greek text comes from the editions of the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible Project and Ulrik Sandborg-Petersen. We no longer use the Open Scriptures “strongs” edition (CC BY-SA).

Changes we made to the STEP Bible data

  • We use only the names, the verse references and the family links of people and places. We do not use the descriptions or any other text.
  • We do not use groups, titles, festivals, songs or other names that are not a person or a place.
  • We do not use people whom the Bible does not name: the people that the data infers to complete a family line, and the people that it lists only by a description (for example, "father of Barnabas").
  • We use English verse numbering. A mention in a psalm title (verse 0) shows on verse 1 of that psalm, because the Berean Standard Bible has no verse 0. We remove references that occur only in the Greek Old Testament (LXX) and references to verses that the Berean Standard Bible does not have.
  • We remove the number that separates places with the same name (for example, "Ai_2" shows as "Ai").
  • For a place, we show the name in the second name column only when it contains the main name of the place (for example, "Mount Moriah"). When that column holds a note or another name (for example, "Near Eden" for Pishon, or "Crete" for Caphtor), we show the main name.
  • A description of a person written in one word with capitals (for example, "motherInLaw") shows as separate words ("mother-in-law").
  • A family link that the data marks as an ancestor, a descendant nation or a founder is not shown as a parent link.
  • Word study: we use only the short gloss (the Gloss column) of TBESH and TBESG, one for each Strong's number. We do not use the Meaning column or any other text.
  • When STEP Bible gives one Strong's number more than one entry (a word with two meanings, or two people with the same name), we use the first entry whose number has no letter after it, or else the first entry.
  • When a gloss names a word and one of its senses (for example, "to hear: obey"), we show only the word ("to hear").
  • We use only the numbers of the original Strong's concordance (Hebrew 1 to 8674, Greek 1 to 5624). We do not use the extended numbers.
  • We do not distribute the STEP Bible files. To get the data, go to github.com/STEPBible.

Changes we made to the other data

  • BibleData: we use a BibleData person only when the name and the verses agree with one STEP Bible person. We do not use the names or the text of BibleData.
  • OpenBible.info: we use one point for each place. We do not use map shapes, and we do not use a point whose coordinates come from OpenStreetMap (OpenStreetMap data has a different licence).
  • Themes: the themes are Doxa's own list of topics. Some OpenBible.info topics and Nave's subjects are joined to them by a fixed list. Other topics are not used.
  • Strong's dictionaries (Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible Project and Ulrik Sandborg-Petersen): we remove the editors' correction notes, show each cross-reference as a Strong's number followed by its word (for example, "H2616 (חָסַד)"), remove the ":--" before the Greek King James Version renderings, and store the text in Unicode normalization form C.
