Mesha on Doxa

  • The Line of Shem: The Family That Leads to Jesus (Genesis 10:21-32)
  • Who was Joktan, and why list his thirteen sons?

Joktan was Eber's other son, and his thirteen sons are listed to count the Arabian peoples into the family of the earth, even as the story follows Peleg's line. Joktan (H3355) gets thirteen sons of his own, Almodad and Sheleph and Hazarmaveth and the rest, whose "territory extended from Mesha to Sephar, in the eastern hill country" (Genesis 10:30). These are the Arabian peoples, and Genesis gives them several lines on the page, counting them into the family of the earth. But watch the branch the story follows. Genesis keeps its focus on Peleg, the quieter brother. Joktan's line spreads out and the account lets it go; Peleg's line is picked up again at the end of chapter 11 and walked straight to Abram (Genesis 11:16-26). The genealogy that matters in Genesis is the one the promise travels down.
