“In that moment, Katz heard God's voice calling him by name, commanding him to stay. Despite a lifetime of rebellion, Katz obeyed.”
1960s Jerusalem bookstore: Marxist professor finds faith! Atheist to christian conversion testimony begins as God is heard.

A Marxist Intellectual

Art Katz, born in 1929 in Brooklyn, New York, was a man deeply entrenched in Marxist and existentialist beliefs. Raised during the tumultuous times of the Depression and World War II, Katz pursued intellectual and philosophical quests, earning degrees from UCLA and UC Berkeley. Despite his academic achievements, he faced a profound moral crisis as a high school teacher in Oakland. Disillusioned by humanity and burdened by unanswerable questions, Katz found himself at a crossroads.

A Journey Through Europe

In 1963, seeking meaning, Katz embarked on a hitchhiking journey through Europe and the Middle East. It was here that God began to intervene in his life. In Switzerland, a German man's words pierced his heart, revealing Katz's need for humility. Katz also encountered an American girl whose life radiated light, making him acutely aware of his own darkness. These moments set the stage for a pivotal experience in Jerusalem.

An Encounter in Jerusalem

Lost in the city, Katz wandered into a bookstore connected to a Messianic congregation. A Jewish woman there spoke of Jesus as the Messiah. In that moment, Katz heard God's voice calling him by name, commanding him to stay. Despite a lifetime of rebellion, Katz obeyed. "This is our bookstore adjoining our chapel. We are a congregation of Jewish believers in the Messiah, Jesus," she explained. Though initially resistant, Katz ultimately surrendered to this divine revelation.

A Prophetic Ministry

Transformed by Jesus, Art Katz dedicated his life to preaching "nothing but Christ and Him crucified." He founded the Ben Israel Fellowship in Minnesota, emphasizing the role of Israel and prophetic Christianity. Katz's ministry spanned nearly four decades, during which he traveled as a conference speaker, challenging both secular and religious communities. He called for a return to the holiness of God, urging others to seek discernment and a deeper understanding of God's nature.

Art Katz's legacy endures through his teachings and writings, pointing countless individuals to the transformative power of Jesus.
