A Divine Revelation Through Nature
Nicolas Herman, later known as Brother Lawrence, was a young man burdened with a sense of inadequacy. At the age of 18, he experienced a profound realization that changed his life forever. During a harsh winter, while observing a barren tree, he understood that the tree would soon be renewed with leaves. This simple observation led him to a deeper understanding of God's power and provision. Recognizing this as a divine revelation, he embraced God's love, which began to guide every action he took.
Practicing Presence of God Daily
At 24, Nicolas joined the Order of Discalced Carmelites in Paris, taking the name Lawrence of the Resurrection. Despite anticipating suffering, he found immense satisfaction in the monastery, even in menial tasks like working in the kitchen or repairing sandals. Brother Lawrence's life became a testament to his commitment to practice the presence of God in every moment. As he explained, 'We ought to give ourselves up to God with regard both to things temporal and spiritual and seek our satisfaction only in the fulfilling of His will.' His dedication to this simple yet profound practice transformed his work into acts of love and devotion.
Life Transformed Through God's Presence
His journey from a self-described 'great awkward fellow who broke everything' to a person radiating 'sweet and calm devotion' was remarkable. Through his letters and conversations, compiled in 'The Practice of the Presence of God,' Brother Lawrence's teachings have continued to inspire countless believers. By making the love of God the end of all his actions, he found true peace and joy. His life serves as a powerful example of how consistent awareness of God's presence can transform even the most ordinary moments into extraordinary experiences of divine joy.
