Early Life and Divine Revelation
Nicolas Herman was born in 1614 in the small town of Hériménil, Lorraine, France, into a life that promised little more than hardship. His education was limited, and his early years were marked by the brutality of the Thirty Years' War, where he served as a soldier. Captured and nearly executed, he sustained injuries that left him lame. In a moment of unexpected enlightenment at the age of 18, he saw a leafless tree and realized the power and providence of God, sparking the beginning of his spiritual journey.
Finding God Through Suffering
Despite this revelation, Nicolas, later known as Brother Lawrence, experienced profound spiritual struggles, often feeling disconnected from God. However, through these trials, he learned to accept his suffering. This acceptance led to a pivotal transformation, bringing him deep inner peace and a sense of rest he had never known before.
Life at the Monastery
In 1640, seeking a life devoted to God, he joined the Discalced Carmelite monastery in Paris as Brother Lawrence of the Resurrection. He immersed himself in humble tasks, from cooking to repairing sandals, finding joy not in the tasks themselves but in performing them out of love for God. He said, "The time of business does not differ with me from the time of prayer...I possess God in as great tranquility as if I were on my knees."
Practicing Presence of God
Brother Lawrence's life was a testament to living in the presence of God. He maintained a continual conversation with God, finding joy and peace in every moment. He believed that even the smallest tasks, like turning an omelette, were acts of love for God, saying, "It is not the greatness of the work which matters to God but the love with which it is done."
His faith and practice attracted many who sought spiritual guidance. Brother Lawrence's genuine spirit and peaceful demeanor spoke volumes, inspiring others to seek the same presence of God in their lives. Until his death in 1691, Brother Lawrence feared nothing, trusting completely in God's constant presence and assistance.
