David Livingstone Christian testimony: Missionary explorer Africa, inspired by childhood conversion to Christianity in Scotland.

Born into poverty in Blantyre, Scotland, on March 19, 1813, David Livingstone's early life was marked by hardship. At just 10 years old, he worked long hours in a cotton mill, yet his determination shone through when he used his first week's wages to buy a Latin grammar book, driven by a thirst for knowledge. Around the age of 12, Livingstone experienced a profound conversion to Christianity, which set him on a path that would change his life and the lives of many others.

God's Calling to Missions

Inspired by Karl Gützlaff's call for medical missionaries in China, Livingstone resolved to become a medical missionary himself. He studied medicine and theology in Glasgow and was ordained as a Congregational missionary on November 20, 1840. However, political events redirected him from China to Africa, where he arrived in July 1841. His mission was clear: to share the love of Jesus, combat the slave trade, and explore the continent.

Exploring Africa for Christ

Livingstone's explorations were vast. In 1849, he crossed the Kalahari Desert, and by 1855, he had become the first European to behold the majestic Victoria Falls. His commitment to faith and exploration led him to traverse Southern Africa from coast to coast between 1853 and 1856. Despite immense challenges, including disease and the death of his wife, Mary, Livingstone's faith remained unshaken. He once wrote, 'God, send me anywhere, only go with me. Lay any burden on me, only sustain me.'

Faith Through Suffering Testimony

Livingstone's unyielding faith and dedication to his mission were evident in his tireless work to abolish the slave trade and bring about positive change. His encounter with Henry Morton Stanley on November 10, 1871, at Ujiji, marked a significant moment in his journey. Stanley's words, 'Dr. Livingstone, I presume?' became legendary, highlighting the global impact of Livingstone's work.

A Legacy of Devotion

Tragically, David Livingstone passed away on May 1, 1873, in present-day Zambia. He was found kneeling in prayer, a testament to his enduring devotion to God. His heart was buried in Africa, symbolizing his deep connection to the land and its people, while his body was returned to England for burial. Through his life and work, Jesus was glorified, and Livingstone's legacy continues to inspire those who seek to serve God and others.
