Terror Grips the Andean Highlands
In the turbulent 1980s, Peru was gripped by the violence of the Shining Path, a Maoist guerrilla group that sought to reshape the nation through terror. This era was particularly harsh for the Quechua people in the Andean highlands, who were caught between the brutality of the Shining Path and government forces. ## Faith Perseveres Through Violence
Ayacucho, the birthplace of the Shining Path, became synonymous with fear and death.
In this fraught environment, Rómulo Sauñe emerged as a beacon of hope. Born in a small sheepherding village near Ayacucho, Rómulo overcame his childhood challenges, including a hearing loss due to a horse kick, and dedicated his life to translating the Bible into Quechua. His mission was not just linguistic; it was deeply spiritual, aiming to bring the Christian message to his people in their own tongue.
Despite financial hurdles, Rómulo's faith did not waver. He partnered with Al Shannon, a Wycliffe missionary, who subsidized the cost of the translated Bibles. This divine intervention enabled Rómulo and his friends to distribute 11,000 Bibles in just one week. The Quechua people, hungry for hope and truth, even sold their clothes to afford a copy of the Bible.
Tragically, Rómulo's dedication to his people and faith cost him his life. In September 1992, while visiting his grandfather's grave, he was killed by the Shining Path. Yet his legacy lives on, as the Word of God continues to transform lives in the Quechua communities.
Another remarkable story is that of Feliciano Ramirez Rimachi, who transformed from living in constant fear to becoming a war hero and, eventually, a mayor. Despite losing fingers when he courageously pulled down a Shining Path flag in 1988, Feliciano's faith and determination never wavered. In his own words, 'We were living around death every day, afraid of terrorists and soldiers.'
These stories of resilience and faith highlight not only the transformative power of Jesus but also the enduring spirit of the Quechua people. In the face of adversity, they found strength in the Gospel, leading to profound personal and communal change. Through their trials, they gave thanks to God, knowing that it was His hand guiding them through the darkest times.
