Chosen by Christ
Mehdi Dibaj's journey from Islam to Christianity began at the tender age of 14 when he encountered the Bible in a Christian hospital in Esfahan, Iran. His faith in Jesus was not a decision of convenience but a profound transformation that led him to proclaim, "Men choose a religion, but a Christian is chosen by Jesus Christ." This choice would cost him dearly, yet Dibaj remained unwavering in his commitment.
A New Family of Faith
Born into a Muslim family, Dibaj faced immediate rejection upon his conversion, as his family expelled him from their home. Despite this, he found a new family among the Christians in Tehran who nurtured his faith and dedication to ministry. Dibaj's journey took him across continents, as he pursued theological education in India, Beirut, and Switzerland, preparing him for a life of service.
Imprisoned for Faith
Dibaj's ministry was marked by boldness and compassion. He translated the Gospel of Mark into Dari for the Afghan people and served at one of Iran's first Christian radio stations. However, his faith put him at odds with the Iranian government, especially after the 1979 revolution. In 1983, he was arrested on baseless charges, spending close to a decade in harsh imprisonment, including solitary confinement in Evin Prison. Yet, even behind bars, Dibaj's faith shone brightly. His calm demeanor and gentle spirit left a mark on fellow inmates, some of whom embraced Christianity through his testimony.
A Martyr's Witness
In 1993, facing a death sentence for apostasy, Dibaj delivered a powerful defense of his faith in an Islamic court, declaring, "Life for me is an opportunity to serve Him, and death is the privilege of getting to be with Him." His bold words, combined with international advocacy, led to his release in January 1994, though the threat of execution lingered. Tragically, Dibaj's freedom was short-lived. The murder of Bishop Haik Hovsepian Mehr, who had campaigned for Dibaj's release, was followed by Dibaj's own abduction and murder in June 1994. His body was found with multiple stab wounds, a martyr for his unyielding faith in Jesus. Dibaj's legacy endures, a testament to the power of faith under persecution. His life and death continue to inspire the church in Iran, reminding believers worldwide of the cost and the beauty of following Christ.
