A Happy Soul Despite Blindness
Born in 1820 in Putnam County, New York, Fanny Crosby's life was shaped by two significant events: losing her sight as an infant and finding her spiritual sight at the age of 30. Despite her blindness, Fanny's childhood was filled with joy and adventure, climbing trees and riding horses. Her father passed away early, leaving her mother to raise Fanny with limited means. Yet, she found solace in her faith and a community that nurtured her spiritual belief.
At eight, Fanny wrote, "Oh! What a happy soul I am although I cannot see. I am resolved that in this world contented I will be." This early acceptance of her condition was a testament to her faith. She later reflected, "Blindness cannot keep the sunlight of hope from the trustful soul."
Surrendering to the Savior
Her spiritual journey deepened when, at 30, she attended revival meetings at the Broadway Tabernacle. Struggling to find peace, she finally surrendered to Jesus while moved by the hymn "Alas, and did my Saviour bleed?" "I surrendered myself to the Saviour, and my very soul was flooded with celestial light," she recounted.
Hymns From Heaven
Fanny's hymns, over 8,000 in total, emerged from a place of prayer and divine inspiration. She stated, "I never undertake a hymn without first asking the good Lord to be my inspiration." Her blindness, which she saw as a divine gift, allowed her to focus entirely on her faith and music. "If perfect earthly sight were offered me tomorrow I would not accept it," she declared, grateful that her first sight would be of her Savior's face.
A Life of Service
Despite personal challenges, including a separation from her husband, Fanny dedicated her life to mission work, teaching, and helping those in need. She lived modestly, spending 30 years among New York City's poor, volunteering in shelters, and teaching Sunday school. Her legacy includes beloved hymns like "Blessed Assurance" and "To God Be the Glory," each a beacon of her commitment to leading others to Christ.
Fanny Crosby's story is one of resilience and unwavering faith, demonstrating how Jesus can turn personal adversity into a powerful ministry that continues to inspire and uplift generations.
