Child Prodigy Searching for Truth
Born in Brooklyn, New York, on October 21, 1953, Keith Green was a child prodigy who signed his first record deal at just 11 years old. Raised in a household blending Jewish and Christian Scientist beliefs, Keith embarked on a quest for spiritual truth. Along the way, he explored Eastern religions and experimented with drugs, seeking fulfillment in fame and music.
A Transformative Encounter
However, by 1975, Keith's life took a transformative turn. Feeling the deep emptiness that fame could not fill, he encountered the message of Jesus Christ and experienced a profound conversion. From that moment, his life was no longer his own. As he said, "I'd rather have people hate me with the knowledge that I tried to save them." Keith's commitment to his new faith was reflected in his music, which became a powerful tool for ministry.
Music as Ministry
His songs, like those from the album "No Compromise," were filled with raw honesty and a call to live authentically for Christ. In his own words, "You can run to the end of the highway and not find what you're looking for, no, it won't make your troubles disappear." Keith's passion for faith was unmistakable in his live performances and recordings, urging others to awaken from spiritual complacency. His song "Asleep in the Light" challenged believers to recognize the needs of the world, reminding them, "The world is sleeping in the dark, that the church just can't fight, 'cause it's asleep in the light."
A Legacy Cut Short
Tragically, Keith's life was cut short on July 28, 1982, in a plane crash in Lindale, Texas, which also claimed the lives of two of his children and several members of his ministry. Yet, his legacy of using music to share the message of Jesus Christ continues to impact countless lives. Keith Green's story is a testament to how God can transform a life and use it for His greater purpose.
