A Skeptic in Virginia
Lottie Moon, born Charlotte Digges Moon in 1840 in Albemarle County, Virginia, was a woman known for her unwavering commitment to sharing the love of Jesus across the world. Despite being raised in a devout Christian family, Lottie spent her youth as a skeptic, dismissing church teachings and focusing instead on her academic prowess.
A Night of Prayer
Her life took a dramatic turn in the spring of 1859 during a series of revival meetings led by John Albert Broadus. Initially attending to scoff, Lottie found herself in a profound moment of reflection. As she later confessed, "I went to the service that night to scoff, but I went back to my room to pray...and I ended up praying all night and giving my heart to Christ." This transformation marked the beginning of her lifelong dedication to Christ.
Called to China
Lottie excelled in her studies, becoming one of the first women in the South to earn a Master of Arts degree. Her intellectual pursuits were soon directed towards a greater calling. Inspired by letters from her sister Edmonia, who was serving as a missionary in China, and a powerful sermon on the needs of the world, Lottie felt a deep conviction to serve. In 1873, she responded to this calling and was appointed as a missionary by the Southern Baptist Convention.
Giving Everything
Arriving in Tengchow, China, Lottie faced numerous challenges, including cultural barriers and limited resources. Yet she immersed herself in the community, learning the language and customs, and ministering to women and men alike. Her work extended beyond evangelism; during a severe famine, she gave all she had, even her own food, to those in need, ultimately compromising her health. Through her persistent efforts, she laid the foundation for what would become one of the fastest-growing Christian movements in the world.
Lottie's legacy is enshrined in the annual Lottie Moon Christmas Offering, which has raised billions for international missions. Her life serves as a testament to the transformative power of Jesus, who turned a skeptic into a devoted servant, impacting countless lives across generations.
