Polycarp of Smyrna, a revered figure in early Christianity, exemplified unyielding faith and commitment to Jesus Christ. Born around 69 AD in what is now Turkey, Polycarp was possibly born a slave and later adopted by a devout woman named Callisto. He became a disciple of the Apostle John, receiving teachings directly from one who had walked with Jesus. This profound mentorship shaped Polycarp's understanding of Christ and his dedication to the faith.
As Bishop of Smyrna, Polycarp stood as a staunch defender of Christian orthodoxy, opposing heretical teachings and preserving the apostolic traditions. His life was one of service and devotion, as recounted by Irenaeus, who remembered Polycarp sharing stories of Jesus' miracles and teachings.
Facing Polycarp Martyrdom with Courage
Three days before his arrest, Polycarp experienced a vision of his pillow consumed by fire, hinting at his impending martyrdom. At 86, during a period of persecution, he was captured and brought before the proconsul in Smyrna. When urged to deny Christ and swear allegiance to Caesar, Polycarp declared, "Eighty-six years have I served Him, and He has done me no wrong. How then can I blaspheme my King who saved me?"
He boldly stated, "If you imagine for a moment that I would do that, then I think you pretend that you don't know who I am. Hear it plainly. I am a Christian." Despite threats of wild beasts and fire, Polycarp remained resolute, believing in the eternal consequences of his decision.
Miraculous Protection from Fire
Sentenced to be burned alive, a miraculous event occurred. The flames formed a vault around him, leaving him unharmed until an executioner ended his life with a dagger. This act of faith left a lasting impact, and his martyrdom marked the end of persecution in Smyrna.
