Standing Firm in Smyrna
In the bustling city of Smyrna, around AD 155, persecution against Christians was rampant. Among those standing firm in their faith was Polycarp, the revered Bishop of Smyrna, and a disciple of St. John the Apostle. His unwavering commitment to his faith would soon be put to the ultimate test.
Polycarp had spent his life leading the church and was known for upholding the teachings of the apostles. Despite knowing that the authorities were seeking his arrest, he refused to flee, choosing instead to trust in God's will. His decision was fortified by a vision he had, foretelling his martyrdom by fire.
Eighty-Six Years of Service
When the day came, Polycarp was brought to the stadium of Smyrna. As he stood before his accusers, they urged him to renounce his faith and swear allegiance to the Roman Emperor. Polycarp's response was resolute. 'Eighty-six years have I served Him, and He never did me any injury: how then can I blaspheme my King and my Savior?' he proclaimed, unwavering in his conviction.
Fire Cannot Consume
The crowd demanded his execution by fire. As the flames were lit, witnesses reported a miraculous event: the fire seemed to form an arch around him, refusing to burn his body. When the executioner finally stabbed him, a dove reportedly emerged, and a sweet aroma filled the air. These phenomena left a profound impact, seen as signs of divine intervention.
A Prayer of Gratitude
In his final moments, Polycarp prayed aloud, 'Lord God Almighty, Father of your blessed and beloved child Jesus Christ...I bless you that you have thought me worthy of this day and hour, to be numbered among the martyrs and share in the cup of Christ.' His martyrdom brought the persecution in Smyrna to a close, and his legacy of faithfulness remains a powerful testimony to this day.
Polycarp's steadfastness and the miraculous events surrounding his death have been chronicled in 'The Martyrdom of Polycarp,' a letter from the church in Smyrna to Philomelium. His life and sacrifice continue to inspire Christians around the world, a testament to his enduring faith in Jesus.
