1907 Pyongyang: Korean revival 1907 testimony, depicting a spontaneous revival prayer meeting during the Pyongyang Pentecost revival story.

By the early 1900s, Protestant missionaries had worked in Korea for two decades with modest results. The church was respectable but spiritually dry. Many Korean Christians practiced their faith alongside traditional ancestor worship. Something was missing.

Then came 1907.

The Pyongyang Revival Begins

In January, missionaries and Korean church leaders gathered for a Bible conference in Pyongyang. The meetings began with study and prayer, but nothing extraordinary. Then, on the evening of January 14, something shifted.

A missionary asked the congregation to pray together. Instead of the usual quiet murmurs, the room erupted. Hundreds of voices rose simultaneously—confessing sins, weeping, crying out to God. The sound was like rushing water, like wind through trees.

An observer wrote: "The room was full of God's presence... man after man would rise, confess his sin, break down and weep." Confessions poured out—hatred, theft, adultery, murder. Men fell to the floor. Others stood trembling. Some ran from the building, overwhelmed.

This was no scheduled program. No evangelist orchestrated it. The Holy Spirit had arrived.

Confession and True Transformation

The confession of sins was brutally honest and deeply specific. Men confessed wronging specific people—and then went to make restitution. A man who had stolen returned the money. Those who had harbored bitterness sought reconciliation. The revival demanded not just emotional experience but moral transformation.

Fire Spreads Across Korea

From Pyongyang, the fire spread. Prayer meetings sprung up throughout Korea. Churches overflowed. Confessions and reconciliations multiplied. By year's end, the Protestant church in Korea had doubled—from approximately 50,000 to over 100,000 believers.

But the numbers tell only part of the story. The 1907 revival established patterns that would define Korean Christianity for generations: fervent early-morning prayer meetings, passionate corporate prayer, expectation of the Holy Spirit's power.

A Legacy That Endures

Korea would face Japanese occupation, war, and partition. The church in the North would be crushed by communism. But the faith planted in 1907 would endure. Today, South Korea sends more missionaries per capita than almost any nation on earth.

It all began when the Spirit fell in Pyongyang, and ordinary believers discovered extraordinary power.
