A Vision of Africa Washed in Blood
Reinhard Bonnke's journey of faith began in the tumultuous times of post-war Germany. Born on April 19, 1940, in Königsberg, East Prussia, he experienced firsthand the challenges of displacement and hardship. At the young age of nine, after a conversation with his mother about sin, Reinhard embraced Christianity, marking the beginning of a profound spiritual journey.
At just ten years old, he sensed a divine call to Africa, a continent that would become the centerpiece of his life's work. This call was not without its trials. In 1967, he began his ministry in Lesotho, facing initial frustrations and limited success. Yet, it was during this time that he experienced a powerful vision—a dream of Africa washed in blood, with a voice from God declaring, 'Africa shall be saved!'
From Small Tents to Massive Crusades
Driven by this vision, Bonnke founded Christ for All Nations (CFAN) in Johannesburg in 1974. His approach shifted from small tent meetings to massive open-air crusades. His largest gathering took place in Lagos, Nigeria, in November 2000, where an astonishing 1.6 million people reportedly attended a single service. "When you do business with God you need faith," he often stated, emphasizing the role of faith as the currency of God's kingdom.
Miracles and Conversions Across Africa
Bonnke's ministry was marked by reports of miraculous healings and conversions. While some skeptics questioned these claims, many followers believed they witnessed God's hand at work. Reinhard himself was clear that his achievements were not his own, saying, "In truth, I have done nothing alone. God has called me and has been my pilot. The Holy Spirit has been my comforter, my guide, and my power source."
A Legacy That Continues
In 2009, Reinhard appointed Daniel Kolenda as his successor, ensuring that his vision for Africa's salvation would continue beyond his tenure. His final crusade was held in Lagos in 2017, a fitting end to a life devoted to sharing the message of Jesus. As he often declared, his mission was clear and unwavering: "I don't want to play with marbles, when God told me to move mountains!"
Reinhard Bonnke passed away on December 7, 2019, in Orlando, Florida, leaving behind a legacy of faith and evangelism that impacted millions. He consistently attributed his success to Jesus, whom he believed guided and empowered his efforts throughout his life's work.
