Spiritual Awakening in Indonesia

In the mid-1960s, the island of Timor in Indonesia experienced a remarkable spiritual awakening that would forever alter its Christian community. Before this revival, many Christians in the region held onto animistic beliefs and occult practices, despite their professed faith. It was a time of blending cultures and traditions, often leaving the core message of Christianity diluted.

The catalyst for change began with an Indonesian healing evangelist named Johannes Ratuwalu. In 1964, Johannes conducted a ministry in Kupang, Timor, where numerous healings were reported. These events ignited a spark among a small group of believers, who, driven by visions of Jesus and a sense of impending divine judgment, began to fervently pray for a revival.

On September 26, 1965, at the Maranatha Church in Soe, their prayers were answered in a profound way. During a prayer service, the participants experienced a powerful outpouring of the Holy Spirit. It was reported that supernatural occurrences, including miraculous healings and even water turning into wine, took place, serving as tangible evidence of divine intervention.

One of the key figures during this revival was Hennie Tunli'u, also known as Priscilla, a young woman who received vivid visions of Christ. Her testimony led 87 young individuals to embrace Christianity wholeheartedly. Inspired by these events, Nahor Leo led a team of 23 young people to spread the Gospel across Timor, fulfilling a prophecy that God would raise teams to preach.

The revival profoundly transformed the island. Church membership swelled from 450,000 to 650,000 between 1965 and 1967. This growth was accompanied by a societal shift, marked by reports of decreased crime and a renewed sense of community. Although met with skepticism and criticism from some church leaders, the revival undeniably left a lasting impact.

The story of the Timor Revival exemplifies how Jesus can bring about profound spiritual change, challenging and renewing faith in the face of cultural and traditional obstacles. The revival's legacy continues to inspire and remind believers of the power of prayer and divine intervention.
