In the midst of the Great Depression, young Stanley Tam harbored dreams of success. Born in 1915 near San Francisco and raised on a farm in Lima, Ohio, Stanley was no stranger to hard work. Growing up as the only son in a financially struggling family, he was determined to make something of himself. However, it was not until he encountered Jesus Christ in 1933 that his life took a definitive turn.
Finding Faith During the Great Depression
At 18, Stanley was selling door-to-door when a farmer's wife shared the Gospel with him, sparking a profound change in his heart. Six weeks later, he committed his life to Jesus. This newfound faith would become the cornerstone of his life's work.
Surrendering Business Success to God
Stanley embarked on a business venture in 1936, founding TAMCO to reclaim silver from photographic waste. Despite his initial excitement, the business struggled. With only $33 left, he prayed for guidance and felt God urging him, 'Stanley, turn it over to me.' Trusting this divine message, he promised to honor God with his business if it succeeded.
He later founded the U.S. Plastic Corporation, which began to flourish. In 1955, during a speaking engagement in South America, Stanley felt God asking for more—everything, not just a portion. He legally made God the company's majority owner, dedicating all profits to spreading the Gospel. This act of surrender led to the company's tremendous success, allowing it to contribute over $80 million to missionary work worldwide.
Miraculous Healing from Bone Cancer
In 1977, Stanley faced a severe health crisis with a metastatic bone cancer diagnosis. With a grim prognosis, he turned to prayer, asking God to use him as a testament to His power. Miraculously, on October 19, God healed Stanley, as confirmed by his doctors the following day. This healing was further affirmed by a missionary in the Philippines who was led to pray for Stanley at that exact time.
Walking in Obedience and Trust
Stanley's life is marked by obedience and trust in God's calling. His commitment was not just in words but in action, as he lived modestly, dedicating his business and life to serving Jesus. As Stanley once declared, 'My prime effort in life is to be obedient to my God, to serve Him and bring credit to His name.'
