A Mother's Influence Lost
Born on September 3, 1889, in Rampur, Punjab, Sundar Singh grew up in a wealthy Sikh family. His early life was marked by deep spiritual influences, largely imparted by his mother, who introduced him to the teachings of Hindu holy men. However, the peace of his childhood was shattered when his mother passed away when he was just fourteen. Grief-stricken and angry, Sundar's despair led him to burn a Bible in December 1903, an act he believed would bring satisfaction but left him feeling hollow.
A Vision in the Night
In a moment of desperation, Sundar prayed, 'O God, if there is a God, reveal thyself to me tonight.' Having resolved to end his life if God did not answer, he experienced a life-changing vision of Jesus Christ speaking to him, 'How long will you deny me? I died for you; I have given my life for you.' This encounter filled Sundar with a profound peace and joy, compelling him to embrace Christianity.
The Way of the Sadhu
On his sixteenth birthday, September 3, 1905, Sundar was baptized in an English church in Simla. He chose to live as a sadhu, a wandering holy man, in October 1906, dedicating his life to sharing the message of Jesus. Sundar's travels took him across India, Ceylon, Tibet, and even to the West, where he spoke passionately about the love of God. 'I am not worthy to follow in the steps of my Lord,' he declared, 'but, like Him, I want no home, no possessions.'
A Lasting Legacy
Through his journey, Sundar Singh's life became a testament to the transformative power of Jesus. The inner turmoil and anger that once consumed him were replaced with a life of purpose and peace, dedicated to sharing the love he had experienced. Although his exact end remains a mystery, with his disappearance in the Himalayas in 1929, his legacy as a devoted follower of Christ endures.
