Spiritual Unrest
Born into a wealthy Sikh family in Rampur, Punjab, India, on September 3, 1889, Sundar Singh was raised in the traditions of the Sikh faith by his deeply spiritual mother, Methab Core. Despite this upbringing, Sundar was plagued by spiritual unrest, feeling unfulfilled by the religious teachings he encountered. His turmoil intensified following the death of his mother at the age of 14, leaving him angry and bitter.
Burning the Bible
In his despair, Sundar vehemently rejected Christianity, going so far as to burn a Bible page by page. However, his rebellion left him feeling empty, leading to a moment of crisis in December 1903. Desperate and contemplating suicide, Sundar prayed, 'O God, if there is a God, reveal yourself to me tonight.'
A Vision of Pierced Hands
That night, as he prepared to end his life, the room filled with a radiant light, and Sundar saw a figure with hands pierced by nails. He heard a voice say, 'How long will you deny me? I died for you; I have given my life for you.' Sundar recognized the figure as Jesus, and felt an overwhelming peace and joy fill his heart. This encounter marked the beginning of his transformation.
The Apostle With Bleeding Feet
Sundar embraced his newfound faith, announcing his conversion to his family, who responded with rejection and persecution. Undeterred, he was baptized on his 16th birthday in an English church in Simla. Sundar dedicated his life to serving Jesus, becoming a Christian Sadhu, living simply, and preaching across India and beyond.
Known as 'the apostle with the bleeding feet,' Sundar traveled extensively, sharing the message of Jesus in a culturally resonant way. He endured arrest and stoning for his beliefs but remained steadfast in his mission. Sundar's unique approach and deep commitment to his faith left a lasting legacy, bridging Indian spirituality with Christian discipleship.
In 1929, Sundar embarked on a final journey to Tibet and disappeared, but his message continues to inspire countless individuals, celebrating the transformative power of Jesus.
