Crisis of Faith in Punjab
Sundar Singh, born into a wealthy Sikh family in Rampur Kataania, Punjab, faced a crisis of faith after the death of his mother. Deeply grieving, he burned a Bible in anger and considered ending his life by jumping in front of a train. On December 18, 1904, while in this state of despair, he prayed for divine revelation. In response, Jesus appeared to him in a vision, saying, 'How long will you persecute Me? I have come to save you. You were praying to know the right way; why do you not take it? I am the Way.' This profound encounter transformed Sundar's life.
Jesus Appeared in Vision
The following year, Sundar was baptized at St. Thomas' Church in Simla on his 16th birthday. Embracing the life of a Christian missionary, he donned the saffron robe of a sadhu in 1906, dedicating himself to sharing the message of Jesus. He traveled extensively, facing persecution and hardship. Despite these challenges, Sundar remained resolute in his faith, stating, 'Christ is my savior. He is my life. He is everything to me in heaven and earth... I drank of it and was satisfied. Thirst was no more.'
Life Transformed by Faith
Throughout his life, Sundar wrote extensively, sharing his insights on spirituality and his experiences with Jesus. He emphasized the importance of seeking God Himself in prayer rather than material desires. Sundar's commitment to his faith journey led him to mystical encounters and instances of miraculous deliverance, although some of these stories are difficult to verify. His disappearance in 1929 while heading toward Tibet remains a mystery. Yet, his legacy continues to inspire, a testament to the transformative power of his encounter with Jesus.
