Ambitious for the World
Born on November 4, 1903, in Foochow, Fujian Province, China, Watchman Nee grew up in a Christian household but did not initially take his faith seriously. As a bright student, he harbored ambitions for worldly success. However, at the age of 17, during a revival meeting led by evangelist Dora Yu in 1920, Nee experienced a profound personal crisis. In that moment, he realized the futility of his worldly ambitions in the light of eternity.
The Lord Became Real
As Nee himself expressed, 'The Lord became real to me.' This marked the beginning of a new chapter in his life. Shortly after his conversion, he was baptized, symbolizing a significant turning point. Nee's transformation was evident as he declared, 'I want nothing for myself; I want everything for the Lord.'
Building the Local Church
Embracing his newfound faith, Nee dedicated his life to serving Jesus. He became a fervent preacher and a pivotal leader in the Christian community in China. In the early 1920s, he began meeting with a small group of believers, which eventually grew into the 'Little Flock' or the 'Local Church Movement.' His teachings emphasized living a life fully surrendered to God, reflecting his belief that 'Our old history ends with the cross; our new history begins with the resurrection.'
A Legacy That Endures
God used Watchman Nee mightily. His writings, such as 'The Normal Christian Life' and 'The Spiritual Man,' have inspired countless believers worldwide. Despite enduring imprisonment by the Chinese government, Nee's faith remained steadfast, a testament to God's sustaining power. Through Nee's life and ministry, Jesus transformed hearts and strengthened the underground church in China, leaving a legacy that continues to bear fruit today.
