Young modern athlete on a basketball court sharing the AJ Griffin testimony of how he came to Jesus and found faith for a new direction.

AJ Griffin had done everything a young basketball player dreams of. A five-star recruit out of Archbishop Stepinac High School in White Plains, New York, he helped lead Duke to the Final Four, and in 2022 the Atlanta Hawks selected him with the 16th pick of the NBA draft. By 21 he had two NBA seasons behind him, a trade to the Houston Rockets, and a $3.9 million contract waiting for the year ahead.

Then, in a YouTube video posted in late September 2024, he announced he was walking away from all of it.

"I gave up basketball to follow Jesus," he said.

To explain the decision, Griffin pointed back four years. "This really has to start off with me giving my life to Christ in 2020," he said. What began there kept growing, until the career most people would call untouchable no longer held first place in his heart. Retiring meant collecting only a fraction of his contract, and Griffin knew it. He was glad anyway. "I'm super excited because I truly get to serve God with my full 'yes,'" he said. Letting go of basketball, he explained, "has allowed me to go into full-time ministry and truly serving the Lord with all my heart."

His ambition now is simple: "I just want to continue to keep sharing the good news of the Gospel to as many people as I can." And his summary of the whole decision cuts through every calculation about money and platform: "Jesus, He's the only One that can fulfill you."

The story ran on Fox News, CBS Sports, and Christian outlets across the country, most of them circling the same question: what kind of encounter makes a first-round pick leave the NBA at 21? Griffin's answer is that he met Someone worth more than the dream.

Few of us will ever hold an NBA contract. But everyone holds something that promises to satisfy and quietly cannot. The same Jesus who met a college star in 2020, and within four years had become worth more to him than basketball, money, and fame combined, is just as real today, and just as able to meet anyone who turns to Him.
