A Childhood Marked by Trauma

Lecrae Devaughn Moore's life had a rocky start. Born in Houston, Texas, on October 9, 1979, he faced an absent father and a childhood marred by trauma, including sexual abuse at the age of six. Moving frequently between cities like San Diego, Denver, and Dallas, he struggled with feelings of insignificance and sought belonging in the wrong places. By his teenage years, he was entrenched in a destructive lifestyle of drugs and crime, earning him the nickname 'Crazy 'Crae.' Despite his grandmother's Bible tucked away as a token of luck, Lecrae viewed religion as a crutch.

An Officer's Unexpected Challenge

The turning point came when he was arrested for drug possession. During the arrest, an officer noticed his Bible and, instead of taking him in, encouraged Lecrae to live by its teachings. This moment led him to rehab and paved the way for transformation. At 19, a friend's invitation to a Christian conference changed everything. There, Lecrae encountered young people who shared his background but had been transformed by their relationship with Jesus. Witnessing their authenticity and joy, he realized his need for change.

A Car Accident Seals His Surrender

Shortly thereafter, Lecrae survived a serious car accident unscathed. Reflecting on this miraculous escape, he acknowledged God's intervention, saying, "OK God, I need to change." He embraced a new path, dedicating his life to Jesus, and began sharing his story openly. Lecrae found purpose in blending his faith with his passion for music, co-founding Reach Records in 2004 to share his message through hip-hop.

Using His Platform for Kingdom Impact

Lecrae's journey didn't stop at personal transformation. He reached out to others, volunteering at a juvenile detention center and co-founding ReachLife Ministries in 2005. He used his platform to encourage others to find hope and life in Jesus. Despite facing challenges, Lecrae embraced his identity in Christ, stating, "Because of Christ, I have found what I had been searching for all along."

Today, Lecrae stands as a testament to the power of Jesus to transform lives. Through his music and ministry, he continues to inspire others to discover the purpose and meaning found in a relationship with God.
