Dr Berhane was a new believer in Jesus, working in a hospital in Eritrea, when the secret police came for him. His crime was his faith. They put him in prison for eleven months, in one of the harshest systems on earth, a place designed to make Christians disappear and go quiet.
He did the opposite. "Every day I was clapping my hands," he said, "and prisoners would come forward and I shared the gospel." A man who had only recently met Jesus decided his cell was simply the next place to introduce Him.
Three Bibles and a valley of death The authorities took his Bible. He smuggled another in. They took that one too, and he smuggled a third. He leaned hard on the Psalms, and when fellow prisoners were taken out and executed, the old line about walking through the valley of the shadow of death stopped being poetry and became the thing that held him upright.
Eleven months of that did not break him. It made him a preacher. The guards meant to silence a new Christian and instead handed him a congregation with nowhere to go.
Wherever they put you, Jesus goes with you, and He is not intimidated by the walls. Dr Berhane found that out in an Eritrean prison. You can trust it wherever you are.
