Yale Graduate Loses Faith
Eric Metaxas, born in Astoria, Queens, and raised in Danbury, Connecticut, found himself adrift after graduating from Yale University. Despite his upbringing in the Greek Orthodox Church, the intellectual environment at Yale eroded his simple faith, leaving him feeling lost and nominal in his beliefs. He explored Jungian and Freudian ideas, attempting to find meaning, but sank into depression, eventually moving back in with his parents, a situation he found embarrassing.
Wrestling with Christian Beliefs
During this time, Metaxas met Ed Tuttle, a colleague who shared his Christian faith with him. Initially resistant, Eric spent a year wrestling with the idea of faith, maintaining a skeptical distance from what he perceived as "weird" Christian beliefs. However, around his 25th birthday, he experienced a life-changing dream. In this vivid dream, Eric held a bronze-colored fish in bright sunlight, which transformed into a golden fishβa symbol of Jesus Christ. He realized that instead of seeking an abstract "God force," God was offering him His Son, Jesus Christ.
God Spoke Through Dream
Waking from the dream, Eric felt an indescribable joy and certainty that Jesus was real. He promptly shared the dream with Ed Tuttle, declaring, "I have accepted Jesus." This was a turning point, as Eric explains, "I was absolutely changed instantly." From that day forward, his life took a new direction. He became open about his faith, integrating it into his writing and public speaking.
Life Transformed by Faith
Eric's transformation is encapsulated in his works like *Fish Out of Water*, where he shares his journey from doubt to faith. He emphasizes the joy and knowledge that came with knowing Jesus, declaring, "Jesus is the meaning of life." Through his testimony, Eric Metaxas illustrates how Jesus can intervene in the most personal and profound ways, transforming lives completely.
