Myanmar Christians Face Increasing Persecution

The Karen people of Myanmar, an ethnic group residing primarily in Kayin State, have long endured trials that test their faith. Since the arrival of American Baptist missionary Adoniram Judson in 1813, the Karen have embraced Christianity, becoming one of the first ethnic groups in Myanmar to do so. The conversion of Ko Tha Byu in 1828 marked the beginning of a significant Christian movement among the Karen. Yet, this faith would be tested through decades of persecution.

In recent years, the situation for Karen Christians has grown dire. Following the military coup in Myanmar in February 2021, the Karen faced intensified persecution. The Myanmar military, known as the Tatmadaw, has targeted Karen villages, burning homes and churches, and displacing thousands. Reports tell of churches being the first targets in attacks, with airstrikes killing civilians and destroying places of worship.

Faith Remains Strong Through Suffering

Despite such adversity, the resilience of the Karen Christians shines through. Semula Horlings, a Karen Christian refugee now in Canada, shared, "God carried us through. And here in Canada, we have abundant blessings that it's beyond our imagination. We can worship without fear and have fellowship with other Christians, talking about our faith openly and freely." This reflects the enduring faith and hope that sustain the Karen community.

God Protects His People

The story of Mya Htet, a young woman from a Buddhist background, further illustrates this divine faithfulness. When her parents tried to destroy her Bible, God intervened, preserving the sacred text. This miracle fortified her faith amidst persecution, leading her to a role as a teacher in a mission school.

Forgiveness Despite Persecution

The Karen Christians' ability to forgive those who have harmed them, even praying for the soldiers who persecuted them, speaks volumes of their commitment to their faith. Through the power of Jesus, they find strength and protection, exemplifying a faith that remains unyielding in the face of adversity.
