Early Calling Through Christian Faith

Henry Ossawa Tanner, born on June 21, 1859, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, became a beacon of faith and perseverance through his art. As the son of an African Methodist Episcopal Church bishop and a mother who escaped slavery, Tanner's upbringing was steeped in Christian values. At just eleven years old, he declared his desire to preach not from a pulpit, but with a brush.

Overcoming Racism Through Perseverance

Despite his determination, Tanner faced severe racial discrimination, particularly during his time at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He was the sole African American student and endured cruel hazing, such as being tied to his easel and left in the street. These experiences left deep scars and drove him to seek a place where he could create freely.

Finding Freedom in Paris

In 1891, Tanner moved to Paris, escaping the prejudice of the United States. This relocation was a turning point, allowing him to flourish artistically and personally. In Paris, he studied at the Academie Julian and shifted his focus to religious paintings. His works like 'The Annunciation' and 'The Resurrection of Lazarus' reflected his deep spiritual convictions and his personal covenant to serve God through his art.

Artist Testimony of Divine Purpose

Tanner traveled to Palestine, enriching his understanding of the biblical stories he painted. He once said, 'It is not by accident that I have chosen to be a religious painter... I paint the things I see and believe.' His paintings captured the sacred and human elements of faith, using light and shadow to bring biblical narratives to life.

His art gained international acclaim, and in 1923, France honored him with the title of Chevalier of the Legion of Honor. Tanner's journey from racial adversity to artistic acclaim serves as a testament to the power of faith and the transformative impact of using one's gifts to glorify God. Tanner's legacy continues to inspire artists and believers alike, demonstrating that with faith, perseverance, and divine support, one's talents can shine brightly, transcending barriers and touching hearts worldwide.
