My name is Carlos, and I was born and raised in the beautiful yet troubled city of Medellín, Antioquia. Life in Medellín has always been a mix of vibrant culture and underlying tension, a city trying to find peace amidst its tumultuous past. Growing up, I was surrounded by stories of conflict and resilience. In my teenage years, I was drawn into the world of guerrilla warfare. It seemed like a cause worth fighting for, but the reality was far from the ideals I had envisioned.
For years, I lived in the dense jungles of Colombia, moving from one hideout to another. The life was harsh and unforgiving, filled with fear and violence. I remember thinking, 'Is this really what I want for the rest of my life?' Yet, I felt trapped, unable to imagine a different path.
Then, in the summer of 2025, something changed. While stationed near the small town of La Ceja, I stumbled upon a small church. It was a simple wooden structure, nothing extraordinary, but the music flowing from it was captivating. Despite my reservations, I felt an inexplicable pull towards the building.
Curiosity took over, and I found myself attending a service. The pastor spoke of Jesus in a way I had never heard before. He said, 'Jesus offers a peace that the world cannot give, a peace that surpasses all understanding.' These words pierced through my hardened heart. In that moment, I realized I was seeking peace in all the wrong places.
I began attending regularly, each time feeling a bit of the heavy burden lift off my shoulders. One night, while in prayer, I felt an overwhelming sense of love and forgiveness wash over me. I knew it was Jesus, calling me out of darkness into His marvelous light.
After that encounter, I made the decision to leave the guerrilla group. It wasn't easy, but God's strength carried me through. The community in La Ceja embraced me, and with their support, I learned to live a life focused on love and service rather than conflict.
Now, I work with a local organization that helps former combatants reintegrate into society. Every day, I get to share the same message of hope and transformation that changed my life. I often tell others, 'If God can turn my life around, He can do it for anyone.'
My journey has not been without challenges, but the peace I have found in Jesus is unshakeable. I am a testament to the power of His grace and the profound change it can bring. Medellín is healing, and so am I, one step at a time, with Christ by my side.
