A New Understanding
In the 1960s, Jackie Pullinger, a young woman from London, embarked on a journey that would transform not only her life but also the lives of countless others. Born in 1944, Jackie grew up attending church only on major holidays, not fully grasping the depth of faith. However, while studying music at the Royal College of Music, she met a group of Christians who introduced her to Bible studies and a new understanding of Jesus. She wrestled with the idea that Jesus was the only way to God, but eventually accepted it, saying, "Well, I don't like that you say you're the only way because I'd rather be broad, but I'll accept that."
A Divine Nudge
This acceptance led to a profound change. At the age of 22, a dream and a minister's advice prompted her to board a ship bound for Hong Kong with just $10 in her pocket. She felt a divine nudge to disembark there and began her work in the notorious Kowloon Walled City, a place plagued by crime and addiction. Initially, her efforts to share Jesus with the residents seemed fruitless. Yet, she persevered, establishing a youth club to reach young men ensnared by drugs.
Breakthrough in the Walled City
Her first breakthrough came when a Triad member named Christopher experienced a personal transformation after meeting Jesus, despite initially avoiding her. Jackie's faith and determination led to the founding of St. Stephen's Society in 1981. This organization provided a lifeline to thousands of addicts, helping them find freedom through prayer and rehabilitation. Her work earned her an MBE in 1988, recognizing her tireless dedication.
A City Ablaze With Light
Reflecting on her vision for the Walled City, Jackie shared, "It was almost as if I could already see another city in its place and that city was ablaze with light." Through her unwavering faith and courage, Jackie Pullinger's story stands as a testament to the transformative power of faith and the impact of following God's call.
