Rock Star Addiction Spirals Out of Control
In the turbulent world of rock music, Alice Cooper, born Vincent Damon Furnier in Detroit on February 4, 1948, became synonymous with shock rock. Rising to fame in the 1970s, Cooper's theatrical stage shows and heavy partying were legendary. However, beneath the surface, he was battling a severe addiction to alcohol and drugs. By the late 1970s, his life was spiraling out of control, marked by consuming two cases of beer and a bottle of whiskey daily.
The Terrifying Wake Up Call
The turning point came after a harrowing incident where Cooper hallucinated blood coming from his eyes. He recalls, 'I saw blood coming out of my eyes. I don't know if it was a hallucination or if it was really happening, but all I knew was I was going to die.' This terrifying moment was compounded by his wife Sheryl's ultimatum to leave him if he didn't change.
Jesus Healed Alcoholism Miraculously
In the mid-1980s, Cooper found himself hospitalized for cirrhosis of the liver, confronting the real possibility of death. It was during this period that his Christian faith, instilled by his evangelist father and pastor grandfather, resurfaced. Cooper credits Jesus Christ for his recovery, stating that his addiction was miraculously taken away. 'People say, 'Think of all you gave up to be a Christian.' What did I give up? Dying of alcoholism? I'm not giving anything up. I'm giving it back, to him,' he shared.
Life Transformed Through Faith
Sober since mid-1983, Cooper reconciled with Sheryl, found a new passion in golf, and began using his concerts as a platform to share his faith. He adjusted his act to remove themes of promiscuity and alcohol, focusing instead on the spiritual hunger he believes exists in everyone. Today, he attends Camelback Bible Church in Paradise Valley, Arizona, and remains dedicated to helping others overcome addiction.
As Cooper puts it, 'When you believe in God, you've got to believe in the all-powerful God. He's not just God, He's the all-powerful God and He has total control over everyone's life.' Through his journey from addiction to faith, Alice Cooper's life is a testament to the transformative power of Jesus.
