Childhood Loss in Northern Ireland
Born in Derry, Northern Ireland, on May 6, 1960, Roma Downey grew up in a home where faith was integral. Her early years were marked by the profound loss of her mother, Maureen, at the tender age of 10. Roma recalled, 'My mother died when I was just a little girl... I was only 10. And I can honestly say if we hadn't had our faith to support us and our church community to surround us... life brought us to our knees. But while we were down there, we prayed.' Her father, Patrick Downey, also passed away when she was 20, yet her resilience was bolstered by a strong belief in God.
God's Guidance in Entertainment
Roma's career began with aspirations in painting, but her path shifted to acting, leading her to study in London and tour the United States with Dublin's Abbey Players. Her breakthrough came with the role of Monica in 'Touched by an Angel.' She described the experience as a 'God thing,' a role that allowed her to share messages of hope and divine love weekly. 'I got to deliver a message of hope and God's love every week,' she recounted.
Creating Faith-Based Media
Transitioning into production, Roma co-founded Lightworkers Media, focusing on faith-based content like 'The Bible' miniseries. She remarked, 'My life's work really is dedicated to shining the light on him. I mean, I named my company Lightworkers. We are the workers, but he is the light.' Her faith-driven productions aim to spread hope and reflect God's love.
Walking in Daily Faith
In her personal life, Roma continues to prioritize prayer and gratitude. 'Each day brings an opportunity for us to start again,' she shared. Her life's journey from personal loss to becoming a beacon of hope and faith is a testament to the transformative power of belief in Jesus. Through her work, she continues to inspire and uplift audiences worldwide, demonstrating how faith can turn darkness into light.
