Ryan O'Hearn had spent years as a professional baseball player and a follower of Jesus, but he had never once spoken about his faith in public. On August 13, 2024, that changed. After the Baltimore Orioles finished their game against the Washington Nationals, the club held its first-ever Faith Night at Camden Yards, and O'Hearn stood before the fans who stayed and spoke about his faith in Christ for the first time in his life.
He was nervous. Sports Spectrum reported that at 31, O'Hearn also knew a quieter anxiety, the kind that comes with age in a league where players in their mid-30s are often considered past their prime. He overcame the nerves by casting all his anxieties on God, just as God's Word directs in 1 Peter 5:7. He told the crowd that the verse, which calls believers to cast their anxiety on God because He cares for them, gives him peace when the pressure builds.
He did not stand alone. Teammates Gunnar Henderson, Jordan Westburg, James McCann, Trevor Rogers and Danny Coulombe each shared their own testimonies that night. Coulombe told the crowd, "This is the most faithful team I've ever been around," and Westburg said he had never been in a clubhouse with so many players who love Jesus Christ and follow Him every single day. In a clubhouse like that, a first baseman who had kept his faith private found the courage to say out loud who his hope is in.
What God did for O'Hearn that night was tender and precise. He took a man's real fear, the fear of speaking up and the fear of an uncertain future in a young man's game, and met both with His care. The verse O'Hearn leaned on was written for every believer under pressure. Whatever anxiety you are carrying today, the same God invites you to hand it to Him, because He cares for you too.
