Gospel Singer Prison Testimony Begins

Helen Berhane, an Eritrean gospel singer, found solace in her faith from a young age, coming to know Jesus at just 8 years old. Despite her family's political imprisonment, she began writing worship music by 14 and preaching on the streets by 18. Her courage to share the gospel led to her arrest on May 13, 2004, when the Eritrean government banned evangelical worship services. Helen was detained at Mai Serwa military camp and endured over two years in a dark, cold metal shipping container. Despite the harsh conditions, lack of food, and brutal torture, Helen's faith remained unshakeable.

Worship Through Suffering and Pain

In her own words, "When I sang, the sadness disappeared. The Holy Spirit covered all the pain I had." Singing became her refuge, transforming her suffering into moments of divine encounter. She said, "In hard times, I sing more. I feel the power of God. I feel all my problems disappear." These moments of worship were not only a source of strength for her but also encouragement to others.

Faith During Imprisonment Torture

While imprisoned, the authorities attempted to force Helen to deny her faith through severe beatings. Yet, Helen's response was one of resilience and forgiveness. She shared, "...when they beat me I'm more closer so those people they help me to know him more...when they torture me I'm more stronger more stronger so now I say thank you those people they push me to know my faith also to know God more to be more stronger." Her unwavering commitment to her faith was a testament to the power of God's presence in her life.

Freedom and Continued Ministry

Helen was released in late October 2006, suffering from severe illnesses and injuries that confined her to a wheelchair. Nevertheless, her spirit was unbroken. She fled to Sudan and eventually found asylum in Denmark with her daughter. Today, Helen continues to speak out for the persecuted, urging Christians in the free world to "not take your freedom for granted. Use every opportunity you have to praise God every day." Her story is a powerful reminder of the strength found in faith and the transformative power of worship.
