Suzanne Elder grew up Catholic in Jersey and was educated in a convent. She wanted to give her life to God, but underneath it all she felt empty. Faith, as she understood it, was a list of things to do for God, and it was never enough.
Worn Down and Out of Answers
She married at 19. Her first marriage ended in divorce. Her second, to a man who did not share her faith, was unhappy. Worn down and out of answers, she prayed a short, honest prayer. "If You're there, please help me."
Neighbours Who Knew God Personally
Pentecostal neighbours began to talk with her about Jesus. What struck her first was how they spoke. "I couldn't believe people were talking about God as if they actually knew Him personally," she said. They opened the Bible with her, and she read that grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. For the first time she saw it. She had spent her whole life trying to measure up, when God had already done the work.
"I thought faith was about what I could do for God, rather than understanding what He had done for me," she said. "I had lived under a constant sense of failure because no matter how hard I tried, I could never measure up."
A Vision of the Cross
When she finally surrendered to Jesus, she saw something she has never forgotten. "I had a vision of the cross and a pair of eyes looking down at me with overwhelming love." The striving was over. God's grace, she realised, was for people exactly like her.
Years later she married Tom, a family friend from Scotland, and they shared 25 years together before he died. Now 79, Suzanne still speaks of the same discovery that changed everything. The gospel is not a ladder to climb. It is a gift already given, held out to anyone who will simply ask.
