From Law Student to Hermit

Walter Hilton was born around the 1340s in the village of Hilton, Huntingdonshire. Initially pursuing a career in law, Hilton studied at the University of Cambridge, where he earned a Bachelor of Civil Law. However, in the early 1380s, he felt a deep inner struggle with his vocation. This led him to withdraw from worldly pursuits and live as a hermit, seeking clarity and purpose.

God Changed My Career Path

During this time of solitude, Hilton experienced a profound transformation. He turned towards a life dedicated to spiritual contemplation and eventually joined the Augustinian priory at Thurgarton in Nottinghamshire around 1386. It was here that he committed his life to spiritual counsel and writing, producing works that would illuminate the path of faith for many.

Writing The Scale of Perfection

Hilton's most famous work, *The Scale of Perfection*, serves as a guide to the contemplative life. In it, Hilton emphasizes the importance of divine grace in the transformation of the soul. As he wrote, "He that through Grace may see Jhesu, how that He doth all and himself doth right nought but suffereth Jhesu work in him what him liketh, he is meek." Hilton's writings reveal his belief that true humility and spiritual growth come from allowing Jesus to work within us.

Legacy of Spiritual Wisdom

Hilton's journey from a life of law to one of spiritual dedication illustrates how God can redirect our paths for His purposes. His teachings on love, humility, and the pursuit of God continue to inspire believers to seek a deeper relationship with Jesus. Hilton passed away on March 24, 1396, leaving behind a legacy of spiritual wisdom that directs the soul towards divine contemplation.
