A Rising Star Makes an Unthinkable Choice
AJ Griffin was living the dream most young athletes spend their entire lives chasing. A former No. 16 overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft out of Duke, he had already played 92 games for the Atlanta Hawks across two professional seasons — averaging 7.5 points per game and holding his own among the best basketball players on the planet. He was 21 years old. The trajectory was obvious.
Except Jesus had a different trajectory in mind.
Griffin first gave his life to Christ during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020 — a season when the world went quiet and, for him, God got loud. What began as a personal surrender deepened into something that would eventually reshape every priority he held.

On September 29, 2024 — just weeks after being traded from Atlanta to the Houston Rockets — Griffin announced his retirement from professional basketball. Not because of injury. Not because of a contract dispute. Because he felt called.
"I gave up basketball to follow Jesus," Griffin shared publicly. "I truly get to serve God with my full 'yes.'"
That sentence alone carries weight that most people will never fully understand. Professional athletes are conditioned from childhood to pursue greatness on the court. The money, the fame, the platform — walking away from all of it at 21 is the kind of decision that makes the sports world stop and pay attention.
But Griffin was unflinching. He saw something bigger.
What Money Cannot Buy
Griffin did not frame his decision as a sacrifice. He framed it as a gain.
"You can have all the riches in the world," he said, "but the only thing that truly matters is your relationship with Jesus."
This was not a young man running from something. This was a young man running toward Someone. From the quiet days of 2020 lockdown, through two NBA seasons, through a trade to a new city, the Holy Spirit was drawing Griffin closer. And Griffin kept saying yes.
Into Full-Time Ministry
After retiring, Griffin entered full-time ministry — choosing to use his voice, his story, and his platform to point others to Jesus. The same discipline that made him an elite athlete was now directed toward a different arena entirely.
His story challenges the assumption that faith is something you fit around the edges of your "real" life. For Griffin, faith became the real life — and everything else, including a career most people would give anything for, had to make room.
What Jesus did in AJ Griffin is a reminder that no ambition is too big for God to redirect. No platform is too valuable for the Holy Spirit to repurpose. And no age is too young to hear the call and respond with everything you have.
