Alistair Begg's life is a testament to God's guiding hand from his early days in Glasgow, Scotland, to his impactful ministry in Cleveland, Ohio. Born on May 19, 1952, Alistair grew up in a Christian home where the Bible was a central part of life. His father, a former soldier with a calling to ministry, instilled in him the importance of faith from a young age. Alistair recalls asking his father how old one must be to trust Jesus, illustrating his early curiosity about faith.
During his university years at Trent University in Ontario, Canada, Alistair sensed God's call to pastoral ministry. He solidified this calling by graduating from the London School of Theology in 1975. He returned to Scotland to serve at Charlotte Chapel in Edinburgh and Hamilton Baptist Church in Lanarkshire, where he spent eight formative years.
In 1983, Alistair became the senior pastor of Parkside Church near Cleveland, Ohio, marking the beginning of a 40-year ministry. Under his leadership, Parkside Church flourished, and his teachings reached a global audience through the Truth For Life program, launched in 1995. Alistair's teachings focus on genuine conversion, a deep faith in God, and the sufficiency of God in all aspects of life.
Alistair's journey was not without challenges. He faced personal trials, such as the loss of his mother in 1972, which deepened his reliance on God. Reflecting on this period, Alistair wrote, 'More spiritual progress is made through failure and tears than success and laughter.' His resilience in faith and ministry inspired many.
As he prepared to pass the baton of leadership in 2025, Alistair shared with his congregation, 'It is not precipitous. It's not driven by anything of which I am personally aware, other than my ambition to pass the baton safely into the hands of my successor.' His legacy continues to impact pastors, students, and believers worldwide.
Through Alistair Begg's life, it is clear that Jesus was the source of strength and guidance, shaping his journey and ministry. His story is a powerful reminder of the transformative power of faith in Christ.
